Use paint to "highlight" the panel you want to cut. |
Using your X-Acto knife start to cut. You must be very careful to follow the lines correctly to make a nice cut |
It takes a long time to complete the cut. You have to do it little by little paying special attention to the cormers |
Once you cut off the roof door you are ready to install the slidding system |
In this case as you can see, is a very simple mechanism: A tube contains a bent wire that will allow the door to slide forward and backwards, also lets the door tilt. |
Once the glue cured use tape to keep the door in place |
Then, cut two pieces of tube to make the guides and glue them in place. |
When finish you can put some putty to make the surface look better and smoother (I did'nt finish this step yet) |
That's the result: Full open |
Half open |
Full closed. Hope you enjoy!!! |
Do you have any ideas on how to make this an internal sliding roof? Maybe some small lateral guide pins and a spring load to hold it up in place when closed - because that's how these BMW roofs actually open.
ReplyDeleteThe lateral guide pins are necessary to guide the door to the closed position, but I would use two metal strips instead of a spring to hold it in place. I would put one in each side of the door glued only to the front part of the solid roof. The other end of the stripes would be pushing the door up in any position, so when the door reaches the close position it would get into the roof hole. You should put a kind of flange glued to the lower part of the door to avoid it overpasses the roof height. Hope it helps you.
